Hydrated pickling lime for ph in coir bulk sub?

Recommended Posts

. 1st timer with bulk...My grain spawn is 100% and I’m about to prep bulk sub for 8 6qt dub tubs, for new Martha, using coco coir and spent coffee grounds. As per @Mush Zombie vid for measurements, I have two bricks coir(1300 grams,650 per brick),2 gallons water and 2 cups spent coffee grounds. In the video( not in text) hydrated lime was used @ 1/4 tsp per 6 cups water to adjust ph. I don’t own a ph meter, though I did purchase same brand of lime as in video. Should I put in some? If so how much? 1 tsp?

Add 1/4 tsp per quart of substrate. Don't pay attention to the water measurement.

@Mush Zombie So.. one brick =650g = how many quarts? One brick can do 3-4 tubs @ 3quarts each. So once expanded , all in all 2 bricks will make 24 quarts coir substrate with two gallons water , two cups spent grounds, and 6 tsp lime? Is that correct?. And thanks for such a quick response. I’m wrist deep in coir, trying to get this project going. Also for two quart (4 tub recipe)50/50 peat moss casing its 4 tablespoons lime?

Add 7 tsp lime to be sure. Mix it up very well and let it sit for a while.

When scaling up in bulk sub this applies per quart of CMC correct?

@darkvoyager the benefits of cmc poo mix sub..... more yield, more dense fruits, quicker colonization or fruiting timespan? I’ve read about ztubs ,and no mist no fan tubs with poo. As newer indoor experimenter is using poo substrates that much more beneficial

Yes after all that’s their naturally preferred substrate.

More yield,/multiple flushes

@Mush Zombie in your 50/50 verm/ moss casing mix it says 4 tablespoons pickling lime... about to mix and pc to case my first 7 dub tubs( or any bulk project for me). Also if everything looks good after ten days....so to case 8 6qt tubs, double the recipe? 8 tablespoons per 2 qt verm, 2qt sphagnum peat moss, 4 cups water? Do I squeeze that tofield capacity as well?

Everything going into your tubs will be field capacity. Both sub and casing.

3-23 The 2 remaining bags that had an extra quart of water puffed and tammed. This raises the question why?  While the 2 bags with 1/2 qt extra we're PCed with the other 3, they are fine at this point. I don't understand why. I would understand if the 3 we're soup(oversaturated) but having all 3 tam when they were PCed with the other 2 that are fine makes no sense. Something to mull over. Next set of bags will be done with MZ's soak and simmer method on Tuesday. At that time I will also take a peek at the first 4 bags that we're nocced 2 weeks ago with GT and LM. Yes I am aware that those species(?) use different grow teks. The LM I am just spawning for G2G to build up until I have enough for a decent crop once transferred to straw based sub.

Trashed the 6 jars.    Decided to not wait the extra day and looked at the other 15 jars.  The 6 PE showed no signs of growth.   The 3 A+ showed some minor white but not enough to tell if it's mycelium starting or something else.   3 of the Jalisco appear to have the same signs of growth.   I marked the lids of those that showed growth and put them back into incubation.   At least maybe the rye wasn't treated with an anti-fungal?  Very slow growth at best compared to the myc in cakes at 14 days.  Maybe not enough surface moisture on the outside of the grain at the time of inoculation?  It's 79F in the closet but maybe not that warm in the box?   Inserted the digital thermometer probe into the box to see if there is any difference and put them back into the warm closet.   Now I'm thinking maybe the Tamp just didn't have enough time and I blew it by trashing them.  Glad I got back up plan C going starting tomorrow.   At least right now I have a positive sign of growth on 3 A+ and 3 Jalisco with hopes of the others showing something next week when I check again.   Increasing the closet temp to see if that helps.
