  1. Hello! I'm a noob here with just a couple posts, and this is my first grow. Seems like this took years LOL! To recap, my first issue was grain spawn progress getting stuck, which turned out to be because I had omitted Tyvek on my jars. Once it was pointed out to me that the myc was suffocating, I took a chance and poked through the silicone seal and hoped for the best. Out of seven jars I did this to, two became obviously contaminated. I dug a hole in the backyard, threw an old log into it and poured the tammed jars in and buried, hoping for a surprise later. Bottom line, don't skip the Tyvek! Next, I took my five remaining jars and put each in a 6qt tub with coir, mixed it all up, made sure the surface was even but not packed, covered each with foil and put back in the incubator to spawn. Problem was, since my grain got stuck earlier, I was now running into the holidays with a planned trip. So after 14 days in the incubator (and right before my holiday trip), on the advice of @Mushinist (THANK YOU!) I opened them up for casing, intending to case and put back into the incubator for 4 more days until I returned. Opening each up I only had one of them tammed, it was also planted in the backyard with a log and a prayer. The remaining four looked healthy. I didn't say they looked good. I think that my sub was a little too moist, and it was unevenly moist -- I had PC'ed it in a bag, and a lot of the moisture had pooled in the lower part of the bag, so getting the field capacity right was difficult. I wasn't off enough to kill it, but the surface of two tubs were very moist and it seemed like the more moisture there was the more uneven it got. Anyway, I cased the four tubs with the 50/50+ recipe using peat and verm and put them in the incubator until I returned from my holiday trip. A note on the casing: it was difficult for me to measure the peat as a volume measurement as per the recipe. I mean, the stuff is not dense. Are you supposed to mash it down? If so how much? What about all the stems and sticks? It seemed like after PCing the verm turned to mud with metallic flecks and the peat just disappeared, so my casing was more verm than anything. It still worked though, with some difficulties I will point out in a minute. Cracking open the incubator, things still looked good (i.e., no tam!) but some of the myc had just partied on the casing layer so everything was even more uneven. I dropped the temp to 68-ish and began fanning and misting. Soon I had pins (pencil is only for size reference, not pointing at anything). Then I had some mushies coming up. This was really just amazing to watch as a first-timer. Before I knew it, it was time to harvest. In each tub, some fruit was ready earlier than others, a lot earlier. I ended up picking those that had dropped the veil and were starting to drop spores, and fanned and misted the others to harvest no more than 12-14 hours later. This seemed to work pretty well as it gave the smaller fruits more time to grow and bulk up, which they did. Now here is where I had some trouble with the casing. I don't know if this is just part of the harvest for everyone, but the areas of myc that had broken through the casing tended to grow multiple stems on the same base, and these were difficult to get out -- the shrooms that had grown individually were relatively easy to twist and rock out, but the multiples always brought a good chuck of myc with them. Moreover, since the casing layer was heavy on the verm, the bases had these little paper-thin metallic verm flecks that were super hard to clean off. So much so that I really want to avoid verm as a casing material if possible! I got a toothbrush and cleaned them up as much as possible, but it was not a good time and I ended up just cutting a lot of it off. This photo shows what I'm talking about. Very messy. I don't have a digital scale (yet), but a kitchen scale showed yields (fresh) of about 14oz per tub, which at this point seems like a lifetime supply of medicine! (And in the meantime, trying to refine my technique I started another 7 jars. They are looking amazing, ready to move to tubs in a few days, but my timing once again is off because I have more flushes on this first grow to go...). I think I need to try some edibles or something so I can keep growing. Anyway, here is one final picture for you, cracker dry: Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks so mush for all your help!
  2. Hey guys! First grow and first post. Just curious if these guys are looking the right size and such. I already tried fruiting without soaking at first and got enough to play with but then went for the dunk and roll (only in fine verm) and obviously saw a big difference. I'm wondering if I was fanning too much because I read today that it can cause smaller fruits. I was fanning 3 to 4 times daily after reading that the white fuzz I encountered was likely myc with not enough fae. The fuzz receded well doing this and I haven't seen it come back, but now I'm just worried I didn't treat them well enough to get them to grow larger. I am fruiting in a myco bag with a .5 micron filter. One of my others is producing some larger guys but I'm not entirely sure what the factor is causing this much of a difference. Both were noc'd the same day and with the same syringe of the Guad strain, one was ready about a day later than the other. There's so many variables involved, I'm wondering how some of you fine folk get the most out of their fruits and flushes doing brf cakes. I'm planning on working up to my two big tubs everyday when I get this down. I have a smaller (6 qt.) opaque tub that will be the next fruiting strategy. I want to see the sub absolutely taken over by these guys. Such a fascinating hobby, quickly becoming my second big passion (first is dmt extraction and work :p) Anyways here's what they're looking like after I plucked the first cake. The ones closest to the bottom of pic are Guadalahara, the top are from a golden teacher cake I am soaking now. I'm leaving the bigger ones in their bag to finish their cycle, they haven't started opening up much yet. Oh and I'm not entirely sure how long to soak after the first flush. Been searcbing for some info on that. Just the same as the first flush, 24 hrs? Aaaand sorry last question, did I coat the cakes too much in verm? The tops aren't wanting to pin much. I got a couple good ones from the tops of the cakes but the majority is coming out the sides. So many awesome people here by the way! Much Love to fungus community! 3. Went to bed, forgot to turn down a circulation fan. Had to move everything since I'm hosting this year's holidays, hence needed more air circulation. Anyhow, second flush, GT, 60qt, HCVG, cased, but humidity dropped to the 70s, over night, hence cracked caps. Explosive growth in 14 hours. MS syringe, have clones on agar, and other plates, doing tiger drops of GT for future tubs. I like doing a tub from MS for choosing clones and spore donors.
  4. First question I realize when veils break for optimum potency so any clues I be looking for or is just and experience thing. Second question 2nd flush I should clean tub with iso and I have new bag vermiculite last time I added peroxide 3% about 50/50 with purified water cuz I have cistern water wetter verm with that and misted with it too. Last question I'm 99% sure that's just fuzzy feet it doesnt like to grow where I bruised with iso sorry noon. I realize I'm very luck to have such a gorgeous grow for very first I took my time and have been patient and vigilant and I even play my baby's some Sturgill Simpson every night man I'm ready to kill my ego cuz its never done me no good no how. Please any advice y'all got would be greatly appreciated. TIAsee the brusing no fuzzy feet or myc there.I'm such a lucky bastard. This has been really fun myo what a relaxing and enjoyable hobby. Think I'm gonna try some morels too. Oh yeah almost forgot second flush just soak cake in water for 24 hours or should I add peroxide to with water too?
  5. Hey all. Here's another question from the spaz noob: These black caps are what? Spores? Evil shit? Clearly, it is time to dry. I have a dehydrator that I plan on using. Any helpful advice or suggestions/hints? Is there a consensus method for best drying for maintaining potency? Thanks again. -MD
  6. Hello all. First time nervous noob here. I've been stalking for awhile soaking in all that I can. But now I'm like that worried first time parent to be that thinks every twinge is labor pains. I've searched every post I can find on best time to harvest & my take away is "just before the veil breaks"(unless collecting spores). But with this being my first time I've NO CLUE how to tell when the veil is about to break. Will my Hawaiian cube babies get bigger before the veil starts to break, is she ready, or does it depend on each mushie? One last question ...my lizard king cap is wrinkly. Is he ok or do I need to tweak something? Thanks in advance without y'all I wouldn't have made it this far!.
  7. I've got a few tubs of PE well on their way and should be ready in a few days. But don't know the best time to pick. Can someone please upload a few pics (preferably PE) of what they should look like? Maybe even too early and too late? I'm finally got an amazing batch and just want to finish off strong! Thanks guys. I'll upload a pic when I get home.
  8. Hey community, I've been growing some PE mushrooms and I think it's time to harvest my second flush. Wow.. these things got a lot bigger. I have a couple questions. Any insight is appreciated: 1) Are these mushrooms ready to pick? Most of them have knots on the stamen and the cap has a white ring around the edge. 2) How about the shrooms in the second pick? If they still need time to mature, but others are ready.. is it ok to pick some of the shrooms and not the entire flush at once? Thanks!
  9. Hey Everyone, Thanks so much for all the great info. Made my first ever grow super easy and looking forward to many more. I have a couple questions and I'm hoping someone can answer. Really any insight or info will help! Questions correspond with the pics accordingly. 1) I included a pic of my first flush of PE mushrooms. Is it normal for them to all grow on top of each other like that? Any glaring problems or things that look like I could have done better (ie more FAE, less humidity, more light, etc..) 2) See how some of the shrooms have dark blue stamen.. Are those okay to eat? I think I know what happened, but could be wrong. I left them out in direct sunlight for a couple hours, also in a room that got down to 60F. Came home and they were all shriveled up.. some of my biggest so far too. 3) Some of the shrooms had these busted caps. I read this was can be caused by lack of light (hence why I put in direct light.. I know, stupid impatient mistake). Are they okay to eat? Is that in fact the case? Any other info would be greatly appreciated! Just want to learn as much as possible before my next grow.
  10. Hey everyone , it's my first ever grow ! It's just about time for harvest , but I've having some trouble with knowing if it's time to harvest ? I've read a lot of different opinions on it , but I think getting some first hand opinions on mine will be best. There's quite a few big ones but there is also a ton of smaller ones under them that just started growing. Could I just harvest the bigger ones to allow room for the smaller ones to grow or is that a bad idea? Any and all opinions are welcome. Thanks! -TopHatSaint
  11. So i'm obviously new here, and new to growing. i moved on over to this forum from Shroomery. I suppose i do like this one a lot more haha. any who, i am wondering if my little buddies are clean, contamination free? And also if maybe they were ready to pick? Any inout would be great appreciated!
  12. So I started the fruiting process a few days ago. This first flush has been coming in rather haphazard with some large ones starting early and little pins everywhere a few days in. I understand that is sometimes normal and it's the second flush that's most often a "canopy" type situation but I'm just not sure when to start harvesting these suckers. Another problem is that I've found no clear guide as to when to harvest PE. I've heard to harvest just the as veils break a little, when you see the white line around the veil, when the shaft gets wrinkly near the gills, and when the gills become dark (hard to see that in a tub)... which of these should I go with? All of them? Should I pick them individually as they mature or wait and pick them all at once? Any help you guys could provide would be supper appreciated! Thanks! Day 63: Fruiting Day 2 - 9/15 @9am Day 65: Fruiting Day 4 - 9/17 @ 7am (today)
  13. Hey guys I'm growing PES Amazonian shrooms, they're going great for my first time I just wanna know when do you guys think I should start harvesting them? They've been growing 5-6 days and some of their veils are breaking (little less than half ) the thing that I was thinking about though is that they look smaller than the pics I've seen of them matured? It's just confusing me because the veils are breaking. A bit of help would be appreciated, thanks
